About Me

Stéphane Krims is a musician and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton, AB), now living in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal, QC). After receiving extensive musical education, including a BMus from McGill University, Krims is currently freelancing in and around the Tiohtià:ke area.

My favourite thing in the universe is sound. From before my earliest memories, right up to this very second, my biggest driving force has been discovering and nurturing different sounds that can be made, and how they all influence one another. This drive has proven to be a valuable asset in my musical career, in such diverse situations as choosing the right pickup setting on the bass to compliment the other tones of a pop band, all the way up to incorporating a squeaking chair into a free improvised show.

Speaking of which - my second favourite thing in the universe is improvisation. While being in numerous ensembles and music programs throughout my childhood and teen-hood taught me how it functions within the settings of the music we all know and love, the inner workings and development of my mind forced me to confront the barriers to improvisation that were set up by the systems which were exposed to me.

The combination of these two progressions and evolutions has resulted in an approach to music that is definitively singular and unique, while also being too impossibly expansive and all-encompassing for even myself to handle. So, while there isn't a single mould – such as “bassist” or “session player” - into which i can adequately fit, you can be assured that everything i do will be driven by this approach of finding a perfect harmony for all sounds to live in.
